Zen Protective Services team members working together in a community setting

About Us

We exist because Toronto's most vulnerable communities deserve safety teams that understand them — not guard against them.

Our Story

Zen Protective Services was founded on a simple observation: traditional security doesn't work in spaces designed to help people heal. Shelters, harm reduction centres, and affordable housing complexes serve populations who have often been harmed by authority figures. Placing conventional security guards in these environments can re-traumatize the very people these organizations are trying to help.

We saw a different path. By recruiting team members with lived experience, training them in trauma-informed care and harm reduction, and embedding them as partners within the organizations we serve, we've built a model that actually works. Our safety teams don't just keep the peace — they build trust, facilitate access to services, and help create environments where both staff and clients feel genuinely safe.

Based in Toronto, we work exclusively with organizations serving vulnerable populations. This focus isn't a limitation — it's our strength. By specializing, we've developed deep expertise in the unique challenges faced by shelters, harm reduction sites, and community housing providers across the GTA.

Our Approach

What sets us apart isn't just what we do — it's how we do it.

We Don't Patrol — We Partner

Our teams integrate with your staff, attending team meetings, participating in case conferences, and building relationships with the people who use your services. We're part of the care team, not apart from it.

De-Escalation Over Force

Our first response is always a conversation, never confrontation. We use evidence-based de-escalation techniques, motivational interviewing, and active listening to resolve situations peacefully.

Continuous Learning

Our team undergoes regular training including Overdose Prevention, Recognition and Response (OPARR), Worker Health & Safety Awareness (WHSA), cultural competency, and emerging best practices in community safety.

Our Values

Everything we do is guided by these core principles.

Dignity First

Every person deserves to be treated with respect, regardless of their circumstances. Our approach centres the humanity of the people we serve.

Trauma-Informed

We understand that behaviour is often rooted in trauma. Our teams are trained to respond with empathy, patience, and an awareness of the complex factors at play.

Harm Reduction

We meet people where they are. Our philosophy is grounded in reducing harm, not imposing judgment — because safety and compassion are not mutually exclusive.

Community-Centred

We don't impose solutions from the outside. We listen, we learn, and we partner with the organizations and communities we serve to build safety together.

Lived Experience

We believe those closest to the problem are closest to the solution. We actively recruit and support team members with lived experience of housing insecurity and substance use.

Accountability

We hold ourselves to the highest standards. Transparent reporting, continuous improvement, and open communication are built into everything we do.

Our Team

Our strength is our people. Every team member is carefully selected not just for their skills, but for their commitment to compassionate, community-centred safety.

Trained Professionals

Certified in Overdose Prevention, Recognition and Response (OPARR), and Worker Health & Safety Awareness (WHSA).

Diverse & Inclusive

Our teams reflect the diversity of the communities we serve, with cultural competency training for all.
